Eastern region exporters of the country has long been facing the problem in realizing their payments from importers in Bangladesh and many exporters have also pointed out that the banks in Bangladesh quite frequently don’t respect the letters of credit issued by them. As part of its ongoing campaign to secure receivables for Indian exporters to Bangladesh, the Eastern Region office of FIEO organized a meeting with Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Mr. P R Chakravarty at Bengal Club in Kolkata on 18th March 2007. Indian MEA official Mr. M. K Singh accompanied the High Commissioner to the meeting which was joined by 35 exporters besides FIEO Managing Committee Members Mr. Pravin Saraf and Mr. S. K. Patwari and DDG (Eastern Region) Mr. Tapan Chatto-padhyay.

Highlighting the problems faced by Indian exporters to Bangladesh, FIEO Managing Committee Member Mr Pravin Saraf requested the High Commissioner to take up the issue of non-payment against Letter of Credit with the Governor of Bangladesh Bank and other concerned authorities. Meanwhile, some exporters complained of non-compliance of procedures by Bangladesh customs. A few exporters raised the problem of securing business visa for Bangladesh.

The High Commissioner assured the participants to take up their issues with Bangladesh authorities and asked FIEO officials to arrange a business delegation to Bangladesh for facilitating speedy resolution of their issues.
