FIEO
organized an ‘Integrated Textile Show’ during MODEXPO 2007 held in
Romanian capital Bucharest from 15 to 18 March 2007. Indian exhibitors led
by FIEO to the show comprised of nearly 50 companies representing various
textile products such as yarns, fabrics, garments, home furnishings etc. The
Indian exhibitors included some well established names in the Indian textile
industry like Raymonds, VSH Silk Mills, Unitex Designs, Technocraft Exports,
Eurovista, Sarju International, Loyal Textile Mills, NRK Overseas, Prem
Textiles and Rhapsody International.
Export
Promotion Councils such as TEXPROCIL and SRTEPC supplemented the efforts of
FIEO in organizing the show. FIEO officials such as Mr. Ganesh Kumar Gupta,
President, Mr. Sharad Kumar Saraf, Chairman, Western Region, Mr. Amit Goyal,
Convenor, Committee on MODEXPO and Mr Ajay Sahai, Director General also
accompanied Indian exhibitors to MODEXPO where India was given the ‘Partner
Country’ status.

Indian
Ambassador to Romania Mr. Ram Mohan inaugurated Indian Pavilion on 15 March
and the ceremony was joined by Mr Radu Zaharia, General Director of
Directorate General for Foreign Relations, Romania, Mr. Dragos Seuleanu,
Vice President, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania, Mr. Tiberiu
Pap, Director, Romexpo besides many other dignitaries.
The Indian
Ambassador informed the Indian participants that the economy of Romania was
on a high growth trajectory and Indian businessmen should give more focus to
this part of the world. He said Romanian market offers more opportunities
after its inclusion in the European Union. He expressed happiness over
regular interactions being organised between businessmen of both the
countries.
Mr. Zaharia
during his address appreciated FIEO’s efforts in bringing such a large
Indian delegation. He said it is very encouraging to note the interest of
Indian companies in the Romanian market. He emphasized that Romania now
being a part of European Union offered greater opportunities to the entire
globe.

India’s major
exports to Romania comprises of electronic goods, cotton yarn, fabrics
& made-ups, RMG cotton and accessories, manmade yarns, machinery
and instruments, manufacture of metals, plastic and linoleum products,
paints, enamels, varnishes, drugs & pharma, fine chemicals and
finished leather. Romania’s total export for the year 2004-05 to
Romania was worth Rs. 4763.30 millions. On the other hand, India’s
major imports from Romania are metal scrap, organic chemicals, iron
and steel, machinery excluding electronics. The total import for the
year 2004-05 was Rs. 7483.40 million. |

Mr. Seuleanu
while addressing the gathering said that such business-to-business
interactions at regular intervals would definitely bring the trade and
industry representatives of both the countries closer to each other. He was
happy with the response the Romanian delegation got during their recent
visit to India from 3rd to 9th March. He said that Romanian delegation was
enthused with the response they received during their meeting with FIEO
members at Mumbai and New Delhi. Mr. Dragos said that the efforts of FIEO
and CCIR would definitely help in increasing our bilateral trade.
Addressing
the inaugural ceremony, President FIEO said Romania could be considered as a
base by Indian businessmen for catering to the wider markets of Europe, CIS
and Balkan Region. "It is very encouraging to note that Indians and
Indian products are highly welcome in Romania. Some of the Indian companies
like the TATA, Essar, Videocon, Ispat, Eureka Forbes have already set up
their offices in the country and many others are about to follow soon."
Mr. Gupta added.

Speaking
further, the FIEO Chief informed that the Federation had recently launched
Indo-Romania Chamber of Commerce and had also signed an MoU with the Chamber
of Commerce & Industry of Romania in Bucharest for promoting bilateral
trade between the two countries. He also informed that the Federation was in
the process of setting up India Trade Centre in Romania. According to him,
the ITC would function as a redistribution point for Indian products and
also serve as a warehousing facility for storing goods sent from India.

Earlier, FIEO
had organized a Press Conference where Mr. Saraf emphasized that despite
early promise the trade between India and Romania in textile sector had a
long way to go. During the evening, FIEO hosted a dinner meet where Indian
& Romanian businessmen, Indian Embassy officials and many high profile
Romanian dignitaries were present. Businessmen from both the countries had
closer personal interaction during the dinner eve.
The Indian
Pavilion was visited by Radu Duda, Prince of Hohenzollern-Veringen and
Princess Margarita of Romania. The Princess took keen interest in Indian
products and bought some silverware and silk items.
The show
organizers informed that MODEXPO attracted 116 companies from countries like
Hungary, Greece, Poland, Italy, Romania and India. During the closing
ceremony, the organizers awarded FIEO a trophy for its efforts in organizing
India Pavilion. The exhibition show ended with a fashion show where many
international designers showcased their latest collections. |

Romania is
one of the fastest growing economies in Europe. Its sector wise GDP
composition indicates that Romania has a good industrialized economy with
approx. 35% contribution to GDP. In the oil sector Romania is among the
first five countries in Europe. India’s trade with Romania has been
observing a positive growth over the years. India’s total trade with
Romania grew from USD 73 million in 2002 – 03 to USD 274 mn in 2004-05 and
to USD 354 mn in 2005 –06 observing a growth of nearly 30% in 2005-06.
India’s export to Romania increased from USD 11 mn in 2002-03 to USD 106
mn in 2004-05. On the import side, India’s import increased from USD 48 mn
in 2002-03 to USD 270 mn in 2005-06. India has been observing a negative
balance of trade with Romania. The visit of Indian delegates is poised to
improve India’s exports to Romania.
