Certificate Course on Entrepreneurship Development in International Trade at Kolkata

The first batch of Certificate course on Entrepreneurship Development in International Trade for the financial year 2007-08 was organized by the Eastern Region office of FIEO from 16th April to 11th June at Kolkata. Fifteen participants consisting of entrepreneurs and junior and middle-level executives from export organizations joined the programme.

The subjects covered during the course were: getting into exports, functions and services of export promotion councils, international marketing (focus on emerging markets and products, market entry, export documentation), foreign trade policy, licensing, tips for new entrepreneurs on international marketing, overview of customs, foreign trade policy & DGFT laws, procedures and documentation of exportation, export incentives (various schemes & their interrelation with excise and custom laws), letter of credit, importance of trade fairs abroad, export packaging, export finance & banking, exchange control regulations, role of ECGC in exports, role of Exim Bank in exports, role of port & logistics, Incoterms, export pricing etc.

Faculties were drawn from banks, export promotion councils, West Bengal Government, DGFT, port trusts, banks, customs, ECGC, Exim Bank, FIEO, industry, etc.

Twenty-four sessions for two hours each were covered during the whole programme commencing with a lecture on "Getting yourself into Exports: and functions of FIEO and various other EPCs/Commodity Boards.

Highlights of Annual Supplement 2007-08 of Foreign Trade Policy 2004-09 and procedures were explained to the participants by Mr. Sanjeev Nandwani, Jt. DGFT, Kolkata.

Several classes on International marketing were taken with emphasis on basic concepts of marketing, market entry strategies etc. Also, several case studies on international marketing were discussed. Export Documentation & Licensing session covered different documents handled during export like invoice, packing list, bill of lading, shipping bills, etc. A mock test was also conducted on how to fill up export documents.

The class on Customs dealt with overview of Customs Act & Customs Tariff act, method & procedure of clearance of imported goods and export goods covering duty drawback & excise rebate and the methodology of sanction. The Export Finance & Banking session explained the different funding options and the provisions of FEMA Act. A session on the Role of Exim Bank in exports was also taken which explained various schemes offered by Exim Bank. The session on Port & Logistics explained major functions of ports and the need for multimodal transport.

A valedictory Session was organized on 17th July. Mr. S K Jain, Chairman, FIEO(ER) chaired the session and explained the steps to be followed to start an export business and how to become a successful exporter. Mr. Vinod Pal, Joint Director, FIEO explained the benefits of participation in trade fairs, exhibitions and buyer seller meets. At the end of the session, Mr. Jain gave away Certificates to the participants.
