Workshop
on Export Procedures & Documentation at Mumbai
|
Western
Region office of FIEO conducted a two-day workshop on ‘Export Procedures
& Documentation’ on 13-14 July in Mumbai which was attended by 50
participants. Aimed at the middle-level executives already employed in the
field of exports, the workshop attracted even senior executives and
proprietors.
Addressing
the workshop, Mr. S Jamati, DDG, FIEO (Western Region) stressed on the
importance of export procedures and the need to fill up documents
accurately. "Errors in documentation may prove expensive; a mistake can
delay the consignment leading to increased storage costs and demurrage, and
sometimes even denial of incentives due to wrong paperwork," he said.

Mr. S Jamati, DDG, FIEO
(WR) addressing the meeting. With him is Mr. Ajit Shah, Faculty,
(Export & Import). |
Mr. Ajit
Shah, the faculty for the programme, while briefing the audience on various
aspects of export documentation and procedures, said, when shipping a
product overseas, the exporter must be aware of packing, labeling,
documentation, and insurance requirements. "It is important for
exporters to ensure that the merchandise is - packed correctly so that it
arrives in good condition; labeled correctly to ensure that the goods are
handled properly and arrive on time at the right place; documented correctly
to meet the laws of importing countries, as well as proper collection
standards; and insured against damage, loss, pilferage and delay." He
said.
Documentation
must be accurate, said Mr. Shah, because slight discrepancies or omissions
may prevent merchandise from being exported, resulting in non-payment, or
even seizure of the merchandise by customs in importing countries due to
misdeclaration. "Documents are subject to precise time limits and may
not be honored by a bank if the time has expired. Most documentation is
routine for freight forwarders and customs brokers, but the exporter is
ultimately responsible for the accuracy of his documents." He added.
|
According to
Mr. Shah, the number and kind of documents, an exporter deals with, varies
depending on the destination of the shipment, because each country has
different import regulations. He explained the documents required for
excise, customs and shipping and the procedures to fill them up. He also
explained the procedures for completing documentation and their presentation
to banks for negotiations. |
