FIEO, in association with Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and Merchants Chamber of Uttar Pradesh organized a four-day training programme on Export Marketing & Documentation to encourage young entrepreneurs enter the export business and to upgrade the knowledge base of working export executives in the Kanpur region. The first ever programme of this kind was conducted in the Chamber’s premises at Kanpur from 19th to 22nd January 2007. The programme was unique for being conducted in Hindi medium unlike majority of such programmes which are organized in the country in English.

While inaugurating the programme, FIEO Managing Committee Member Mr. Irshad Mirza observed that Kanpur had great export potential in leather shoes, saddlery and other leather accessories besides plastic items and light automotive components, but the actual exports so far had been much below the potential. He also informed that against the grant of Rs. 290 lac by the central government for the development of leather sector in Kanpur, only Rs. 25 lac was likely to be spent during the current fiscal.

Citing a study conducted by the Ministry of Commerce & Industry which has found direct correlation between country’s export and employment generation, Mr Mirza, who is also the Chairman of Mirza International Ltd, said that Indian export industry was providing employment to over 10 million people against a turnover of100 bn dollars and was on way to generate additional employment for 5 million people by reaching a turnover of 150 bn dollars in near future. Mr. Mirza hoped that the knowledge of export procedures and documentation through the programme would help increase exports from Kanpur and employment in the area. Chamber’s President, Mr. R.G. Bagla also expressed hope that the programme supported by high-level professionals would be of great help to export managers and would help increase Kanpur’ s share in India’s exports. He felt that such programmes should be regularly organized to create awareness amongst budding exporters of this belt.

The Northern Region Chairman of FIEO, Dr R K Dhawan while giving away Certificates to the participants, advised them to explore the possibility of beginning their export ventures with the help of relatives and friends staying aboard who could ensure payment. "Before executing order, you must ensure your payments," he advised. As the next step, he said, the new exporters should go abroad, visit departmental stores and meet their potential clients to secure regular export orders.

FIEO welcomes commissioning of dedicated freight corridors

FIEO President Mr. Ganesh Kumar Gupta has welcomed the commissioning of dedicated freight corridors by railways. "These corridors, which are projected to cover a distance of about 7000 kms, will not only reduce the delivery period for export shipments but also reduce the logistic costs borne by the exporting community," said Mr. Gupta. Logistic cost is currently estimated at about 13% of the total cost of products exported.

Citing a World Bank study report saying that each additional day in transport delay costs 0.5% of the cargo value for goods transported by ship or rail, the FIEO Chief added that a saving of ten days transportation time will result in the net benefit of 5% of cargo value to exporters.

Railways is already working on two freight corridors - one running from Tughlakabad to Mumbai and another from Ludhiana, Punjab to Howrah. A major chunk of the containerized traffic moves through these routes. However, the ratio of containerized cargo to the total cargo is still as low as 47.3%, which is much below the international level in cargo movement. Assuming 8% growth in cargo traffic, containerized cargo to be handled in next ten years will increase to 20 million TEUs from the present level of 5 million TEUs.
