The Northern Region Office of FIEO organized its 7th Short Term Refresher Programme on International Trade from June 18-22, 2007 at New Delhi in association with IIFT. About 50 exporters from different sectors participated in the programme which covered subjects such as foreign trade policy, challenges in global marketing, framework of international trade documents, role of distribution, pricing and selection of market for export business, managing currency risks in export transaction, implications of changes under UCP 600, use of internet in export business etc.

According to the Chairperson (MDP), IIFT, Dr. Vijaya Katti, the 7th Programme included new curriculum and she hoped that it would meet the changing needs of exporters. Certificates were distributed to the participants at the end of the programme.

While welcoming the participants, Federation’s Northern Region Chairman Dr R. K. Dhawan said the country is all geared to clock an export target of USD 200 billion during the next financial year but for the rising rupee which is playing havoc. According to his estimates, the exporting community has lost almost Rs 46,000 crore due to appreciation of rupee by nearly 15% in the last one year.

Referring to the current stalemate at the WTO on the issues of agricultural subsidies, Dr. Dhawan said that the US and the EU were giving subsidies to the tune of 300 billion dollars to their farmers; yet, they were pushing the developing countries to reduce agricultural subsidies to secure better market access for their own farmers. He said India can’t compromise on the issue, as nearly 60% of our population lives on agriculture against merely 3% of population in US and EU living on the same.

FIEO Director General Mr. Ajay Sahai in his address informed that the WTO, in its Trade Policy Review conducted in May 2007, had complimented India for unilateral trade and structural reforms. He said Indian economy is showing signs of improvement day-by-day and the country is looking to invest 500 billion dollars in infrastructure in the next few years. On the quantum of exports from the country, he said exports stood at USD 124 billion last year and this year the exporters were looking to achieve USD 160 billion.

Commenting on India’s swelling forex reserves, IIFT Director Mr. K. T. Chacko said India is not having foreign exchange surplus from its own earnings but from other sources like FDI, transfers, investments in stock markets etc. "Such reserves are not sustainable and in the bad patch they quickly go out of the country," he added. Mr. Chacko feels that for having sustainable forex reserves, the country needs to consolidate its earnings from exports.

A view of the participants.

Dr. Katti in her remarks on doing international business said, "We need to understand business in a cohesive manner and focus on the non-tariff barriers and the challenges emerging out of it." The Programme Director Prof. Harkirat Singh observed that international business was changing very fast and said we must meet the challenges that are emerging in the global market.
