As a major exporter of plantation products, Kerala is poised to take the fullest advantage of the incentives announced by the Commerce Minister recently for promoting export of agricultural products. FIEO Past President Mr. P. Gangadharan Pillai said this at an interactive session jointly organized by the Southern Region office of FIEO and Kerala State Export Trade Development Council (KEREXIL) to discuss the Annual Supplement to Foreign Trade Policy on 5th May at Trivandrum. The event was sponsored by the Federal Bank.

Mr. A. Komu, Joint Director General of Foreign Trade in Cochin also held a similar view while saying that the recent Policy announcements focused almost all major product categories where Kerala was having greater export potential than other states.

Export promotion bodies in Kerala seem to be gearing up to seize the opportunity. KEREXIL Director Mr. E. Yoonus Kunju informs that they have planned to hold in the near future a two-day National Seminar on Agro products from Kerala in association with FIEO. According him, the Council is also about to bring out a comprehensive Exporters Directory of Kerala which will connect the exporters from the region with the international buyers.

The customs formations in the state are also preparing themselves to meet the upcoming requirements of the trade. Customs Joint Commissioner Mr. C.H. Venkat Reddy informs that Cochin Customs has already introduced 24x7 cargo examining facility. Meanwhile, he requests the exporters to make greater use of online facilities for documentation with Customs.

The interactive session was followed by deliberations on Foreign Exchange and Credit Risk Management. Mr. V. Chandramohan, Asst. General Manager, Federal Bank advised the exporters to remain cautious about the volatility in international currency movements.

Prof. Abdul Aziz, Vice Chancellor of Cochin University who joined the deliberations exuded confidence that the country was on way to join the club of major international traders.
