at Mumbai

The number and kind of documents an exporter has to deal with varies according to the destination of the shipment as each country has its own specific import regulations. Thus export documentation must be precise. Even slight discrepancies or omissions may prevent merchandise from being exported, result in nonpayment, or even lead to the seizure of the export merchandise by customs in importing countries. Moreover, export documents are subject to precise time limits and may not be honored by a bank if the time has expired.

In order to educate the export executives about documentation, the Western Region office of FIEO conducted a two-day Workshop on ‘Export Procedures & Documentation’ on 25th & 26th May in Mumbai. Around 35 middle and senior level executives from export houses, including proprietors, participated in the Workshop.

Addressing the participants, the FIEO DDG (Western Region), Mr. S Jamati stressed on the importance of export documents and said "errors in documentation are expensive." A mistake can delay the consignment leading to increased storage cost and even denial of incentives, he added.

Mr. Ajit Shah, an expert on export documentation, explained in detail the various aspects of documentation and its completion procedure. He highlighted the importance of packing, labeling, documentation, and insurance requirements for the exporters while shipping goods. "Most documentation is routine for freight forwarders and custom house agents, but the exporter is ultimately responsible for the accuracy of his documents," Mr. Shah added.
