FIEO explores trade potential in Slovenia

From Lto R: Ms. Tinoo Joshi, Secretary General, FIEO, Dr. V. S. Seshadri, Indian Ambassador designate to Slovenia and Mr. Subhash Mittal, Convenor, FIEO Committee on International Trade & Export Promotion

Most of Austria’s import is from Koper Port in Slovenia which can be linked with Indian seaport and if a direct shipping link is established between India and Slovenia, it can reduce the cost of transportation between the two countries substantially. Indian Ambassador designate to Slovenia Dr. V. S. Seshadri said this at a meeting with FIEO members at New Delhi on 7th February 2007.

Calling Slovenia ‘a gateway to Eastern as well as Western EU member states,’ Dr. Seshadri added that by creating warehouse and display facility in Slovenia, Indian exports can be raised not only to Slovenia but also to the neighbouring EU countries. He informed that the International Centre for Promotion of Enterprises (ICPE) in Slovenia could provide crucial support in organizing bilateral trade promotion activities.

During the meeting, Mr. Subhash Mittal, Convenor, FIEO Committee on International Trade & Export Promotion suggested that some space should be earmarked in the Indian Embassy in Slovenia for showcasing catalogues of products and services of the members of FIEO and various export promotion councils. He further stated that getting visa for Slovenia was the major irritant in Indo-Slovenian Trade but hoped that with the setting up of a permanent Indian diplomatic mission in Slovenia, getting visa could become easier for Indian exporters.

FIEO Managing Committee Member Mr. Subhash Goyal in his address said that there was no direct air link between India and Slovenia. As a major travel agent, Mr. Goyal promised to facilitate travel related services between India and Slovenia if such direct air link was set up.

Earlier, FIEO Secretary General Ms. Tinoo Joshi while welcoming Dr. Seshadri emphasized the importance of such interactive meets in terms of sharing and understanding the exporters’ experiences and problems, exploring the untapped business opportunities and working out a roadmap for promoting India’s trade with Slovenia.

Participants attending the meeting evinced interest to know about the scope for consultancy services in Slovenia in the field of infrastructure. Members representing Indian pharmaceutical industries inquired about the criteria and procedure for registration of pharmaceutical units in Slovenia. A few participants explored the possibility of export of handicrafts and textiles to Slovenia.

Slovenia is the most developed amongst the breakaway states of former Yugoslavia. It is a member of EU since 2004 and its GDP per capita is 80% higher than the EU average.

Recently India has decided to open Indian Embassy in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. Dr. V. S. Seshadri is privileged to become the first Indian Ambassador to Slovenia.
