Entrepreneur Trade Expo in Dhaka

FIEO
organized participation of Indian women entrepreneurs in the "Women
Entrepreneur Trade Expo 2007" held from 29th September to 5th October
2007 at Dhaka, Bangladesh. Aimed at providing a unique opportunity to
showcase merchandise for Eid shopping, the exhibition has been a regular
event organised during Ramadan by the Pakistan High Commission since 2004. |

The
exhibition, organized for the 4th consecutive year, provided networking
opportunities to women entrepreneurs of South Asia. Parallel events like
seminars and round tables exposed them towards new market strategies, modern
production techniques, time and finance management skills, packaging
standards, pricing concepts, communication skills etc.
More than 75
women entrepreneurs from India, Bangla-desh, China, Pakistan and Iran took
part in the exhibition. The exhibits included fabrics, garments, shoes,
chappals, khusas, bangles, mehandi, bags, runners, scarves, cushions, herbal
cosmetics, home décor, bed linens, carpets, utensils, handicrafts etc.
Indian
contingent led by FIEO comprised of seven participants. They included M/s
Sharda Creations (Orissa) dealing in tribal jewellery, traditional saris,
Orissa handicrafts and garments; M/s Elegant Interiors and Furnishers (New
Delhi) dealing in embroidered garments, woolen shawls and henna; and ARTFED
(Assam) dealing in textiles, garments and handicrafts.
M/s Sharda
Creations tied up with Art Club Bangladesh to hold an exclusive high profile
art exhibition after the expo. The company was offered a permanent space in
the Art Club.
While
inaugurating the expo, Pak High Commissioner Mr. Alamgir Babar announced
that the funds generated from the exhibition would be used to support
participation of Bangladeshi women entrepreneurs in trade fairs organized in
Pakistan. Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Mr Pinak R Chakrabarty,
Country Head of Bank Alfalah Limited-Bangladesh & Co-sponsor of the expo
Mr Majedur Rahman, CEO of Warid Telecom International Limited Mr Muneer
Farooqui and other prominent representatives from trade and industry were
present on the occasion.

Alongwith the
Indian participants, Ms Nirmala Tete Assistant Director, FIEO called on
Indian envoys in Dhaka and sought information on import duty levied by
Bangladesh on products like handicrafts, textiles etc. FIEO officials also
explored with them the possibility of organizing an India Week in Dhaka.
India’s
trade with Bangladesh currently stands at USD 1856.35 mn. The main items of
India’s export to Bangladesh include edible vegetables |

and tubers; cereals; organic chemicals; mineral fuels, mineral oils and
products of their distillation; bituminous substances; mineral waxes;
cotton; plastic and articles thereof; iron and steel; vehicles other than
tramway or railway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof; nuclear
reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical appliances and parts thereof,
etc. The main items of import from Bangladesh include other vegetable
textile fibres; paper yarn and woven fabrics; other made up textile
articles; sets; worn clothing and worn textile articles; rags; inorganic
chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare–earth
metals, or radi elem or of isotopes; fish and crustaceans, mollusks and
other aquatic invertebrates etc.
