Held in a space of approx. 10,000 sq. mt., the fair brought together roughly 180 exhibitors from Turkey, China, India, Germany, Taiwan, Austria, Brazil, Bangladesh, France and Japan. Around 32 Indian companies participated in the fair under the aegis of FIEO, SRTEPC and TEXPROCIL.

Some prominent Indian participants were GTN Industries Limited, Hyderabad dealing in 100% cotton yarn, mercerized yean, dyed yarn, knitted yarn; Utsav Exim Limited, New Delhi dealing in hand embroidered zari emblems and fashion accessories; Roto Screentech Pvt. Turkey is one of the leading textile manufacturers of the world. Its textile industry accounts for 10% of GNP and 20% of employment in manufacturing sector. Until 1980, Turkey imported nearly all textile machines from abroad. But now, Turkey is a big manufacturer of textile machinery and equipment. Most of the manufacturing units are located in Istanbul and Izmir.

India’s exports to Turkey witnessed 40% growth in the year 2005-06 over the previous year and cross USD 1 billion mark. The main export items are mineral fuels (USD 169 mn), man-made staple fibres (USD 97 mn), vehicles (USD 86 mn), organic chemicals (83mn), cotton (USD 75 mn), plastic and articles (USD 62 mn), iron & steel (USD 40 mn), pharmaceutical products (USD 31 mn), man-made filaments (USD 26 mn), and articles of apparel (USD 22 mn) etc. The total imports of Turkey are USD 120 billion of which India’s share is a meager 0.84% (USD 1.01 billion). There are ample opportunities for Indian companies to export machinery, chemicals, semi-finished goods, fuels and transport equipments etc. to Turkey.

India’s Imports from Turkey are worth USD 194 million. The two major items of imports are iron & steel (USD 51 mn) and nuclear reactors, boilers & machinery (USD 30 mn).

Mr. Abhishek Tayal, Asst. Director, FIEO informing visitors about FIEO’s activities.

As a member of European Customs Union, Turkish products enjoy duty free access within Europe. Indian exporters can export their products to Europe via Turkey to avail duty benefit. Turkey encourages Indian exporters to set up joint ventures in its textile industries.
