FIEO
led a nine-member delegation, representing sectors such as garments,
home textiles, silk fabrics and fashion wear, to ASAP Global Sourcing
Show held at Las Vegas from 26th to 29th August. The participants
claimed to have fetched business worth at least US$ 300,000 during the
show. Western Region Chairman of FIEO, Mr. S. K. Saraf led the
delegation.
Visiting
buyers were found looking for eco-friendly products made from
non-toxic inputs under standard social norms. They sought fabrics made
from organic cotton and processed with vegetable dyes.
The
global textile and clothing industry is worth more than US$4.4
trillion, with clothing accounting for 60% of the market share and
textiles the remaining 40%. Global trade in textile and clothing is
currently at $356 billion and is expected to grow to $600 billion by
2010. The United States and the European Union together dominate
consumption, accounting for 64% of clothing and 39% of textile. The
dominant markets for India’s textile and apparel exports are the US
and EU, which together account for nearly 65% for its total exports.
India
is one of the leading suppliers of readymade garments to US. The US
textile & apparel industry serves the world’s biggest market for
finished textiles and clothing. US fibre consumption per head is
higher than anywhere else in the world. The US apparel market is also
the world’s most lucrative market. This has made it a prime target
for exports from low-cost countries.
