FIEO disappointed with Finance Ministry over service tax issues

FIEO President Mr. Ganesh Kumar Gupta has expressed disenchantment over continued silence by the Finance Ministry on the issue of service tax exemption to exporters. He says that despite repeated requests made by the Commerce Ministry to provide service tax exemption/remission to exporters as one of the measures to offset the impact of stronger rupee, the Finance Ministry has not issued any relevant notification so far.

At one hand, FIEO Chief calls for complete exemption of service tax for overseas services used by exporters, on the other hand, he proposes an effective mechanism to remit taxes on domestic services used by them within 30 days, alongwith the provision for interest on the delayed period. He says that exporters of non-Cenvatable products and merchant exporters are not enjoying any service tax relief and even the Cenvat route is denying relief to small exporters who are outside the excise net.

Mr. Gupta also opposes the recent hike (from 60% to 75%) in service tax for packaged tour operators and requests the Finance Ministry to provide clarifications on procedural/technical issues related to service tax. He also seeks simplification of procedures with regard to export through courier
