Market Development
Programme at Meerut
 |
Meerut is
known for manufacturing sports goods, cane furniture and hand tools for
sports items. In order to boost export of these items from this western UP
town, a two-day Market Development Programme was organized here jointly by
FIEO and IIFT on 18 & 19 March. Western UP Chamber of Commerce (WUPCC)
assisted in organizing this programme.
According to
FIEO’s Northern Region Chairman Dr R.K.Dhawan, the Federation is planning
to organise a series of such MDPs across the whole of the Northern India
with a view to encouraging the manufacturers in the region to enter |

into
exports by helping them understand the dynamics of international trade. Such
programmes have already been organized by the Federation at places like
Lucknow, Kanpur, Khurja and Farukhabad in the recent past.
Explaining
the current export scenario of the country to the participants at Meerut, Dr
Dhawan said that appreciating rupee vis-à-vis US dollar was not only
cutting into exporters’ operating profits but also threatening their very
sustenance. Reiterating Federation’s demand for reintroducing dual
exchange rate system to rescue exporters from the current predicament, he
said, "We have been requesting the government for more than a year to
reintroduce dual exchange rate system - one for the export purposes and
another for the import and other trading purposes - but so far our words
have fallen on deaf ears. We have also been asking for a series of fiscal
and other measures to help the exporters, but what we have got till date are
insufficient to make for the losses suffered by exporters. Surprisingly, the
budget completely neglected the concerns of exporters compelling our
Commerce Minister to meet the Prime Minister and convey exporter’s concern
to him immediately after the announcement of the budget. We are waiting to
see if sufficient relief is given to exporters in the forthcoming foreign
trade policy announcement."
Dr Dhawan
also referred to the impact of US subprime crisis on export prospects from
the country and warned that if the government did not initiate immediate SOS
measures, then the dual blows received by our exporters would lead to
substantial workers’ lay off in the export industry.
During the
programme, Prof. S K Verma and Prof. Madanlal from IIFT, New Delhi made
presentations on global marketing framework, WTO, export and import policy;
risk management, selection of market and export documentation.
Mr. Mahesh
Jain, Senior Vice-President of WUPCC welcomed FIEO’s initiative in
organizing the programme.
