For any economy in the world, small and medium enterprises are strategically important for creating trade and employment, says FIEO’s Northern Region Chairman Dr R K Dhawan. Addressing a meeting on the role of small and medium enterprises organized by FIEO on 27th February at New Delhi, Dr. Dhawan said the SMEs are inherently flexible to quickly adapt to the fast changing market trends and thus infuse competitiveness in a market economy and help curb monopolies. 44 foreign delegates representing various small and medium enterprises including government organizations, NGOs and banks joined the meeting.

According to Dr. Dhawan, the adaptability possessed by SMEs makes them crucial players for export led growth economies as only they can supply niche products to global market. He, however, points out that most SMEs are constrained to enter global market and are forced to remain as suppliers to large export enterprises due to lack of adequate market information, capital, finance, technology and human resources.

FIEO Director General Mr. Ajay Sahai in his address informed the foreign delegates about the role of FIEO as an interface between the small and medium export enterprise and the government. He said the Federation has been actively engaged in drawing the attention of the policy makers towards the concerns of these enterprises at central as well as state levels.

Mr. C V Saraf, Deputy Director, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise, explained about the various schemes run by his Ministry to develop such enterprises. He said the Ministry lends financial assistance to small and medium industries for technological upgradation.

President of the Association of Buying Houses Ms Rohini Suri on this occasion explained how it was appropriate to appoint an agent in India for all those who want to source quality goods from here.

Visiting foreign delegates felt that FIEO should organize buyer seller meets, exhibitions and specialized trade shows to promote greater interaction between small and medium enterprises of India and the world.
