FTP & Sourcing Buyers through Internet" at Jaipur

Developments in internet and web based technologies have removed distinctions between traditional and global markets, said Dr R.K. Dhawan, Chairman, FIEO (Northern Region) while addressing a Workshop on "Financial Schemes, Foreign Trade Policy & Sourcing buyers through Internet" organized by FIEO in association with Jaipur Textiles Research Association (JTRA) on 11 July at Jaipur.

Dr Dhawan said: "Lower rates, improvement in communication infrastructure and competition among the companies have made available high-speed internet connections at every office. A rapid growth in internet users has been registered all over the world which is evident from the fact that between 2000 and 2007 the growth in internet users increased by almost 266%.

Dr Dhawan advised exporters to change the modus operandi of their business and switch to e-commerce. "If you continue to operate through traditional means of letters and faxes, you will be taken as backward and unprofessional. E-commerce, coupled with appropriate business strategy can enable you to compete with large and capital rich business houses in global market." He said.

Mr. S.K. Sharma, Jt. DGFT, Jaipur, in his presentation on Foreign Trade Policy informed about various provisions and benefits available for exporters under the Policy.

Professor Nilanjan Chattopadhyaya from S P Jain Institute of Management apprised the participants of how to use technology in enhancing business and how to source buyers through important portals. While responding to a query by a participant, he said: "Now there is no need to visit countries in search of buyers. Through internet only, a manufacturer can send details of his product, its quality, price etc. to his prospective buyers and can get export orders." He focused his presentation on textiles, handicrafts and gems & jewellery and demonstrated how to tap global market through electronic means.

Mr. S B Agarwal, Secretary, JTRA mentioned about the utility of such workshop in helping entrepreneurs to know the new methods of searching buyers and booking orders without physically visiting abroad.

While proposing vote of thanks, Mr. Sunil Agnihotri, Jt Deputy Director General, FIEO (Northern Region) said Rajasthan is endowed with plenty of exceptional quality minerals, surplus agricultural goods and exceptionally good quality handicrafts and there exists a good potential for augmenting export of these items from the state. He took the opportunity to apprise the participants of the role of FIEO in export promotion and invited them to register themselves with FIEO.

The share of Rajasthan in India’s exports in the year 2006-07 was 2.65%. During this period, Rajasthan exported goods worth Rs 15186.41 crore. Export from Rajasthan for the year 2007-08 is estimated to grow by 18.5 % and reach Rs. 18,000 crore. Major export items from Rajasthan are textiles, gems & jewellery; engineering goods, mineral fuels and oils, chemicals & allied products and handicraft items.
