Seminar on Strategic Export Management

FIEO and Citibank jointly
organised 4th seminar on "Strategic Export Management" on 18th
July at Hyderabad. About 60 exporters joined the Seminar. Earlier three
seminars were organized at Bangalore, Chennai and Cochin.
Mr. Prayaga
Subrahmanyam,
General Manager, Foreign Exchange Department, RBI, Hyderabad in his
inaugural address explained the role of the Central Bank in assisting
exporters to avoid pitfalls, especially while dealing with financial
institutions. He advised the exporters to have a forex risk management
policy in place to avoid falling prey to speculative deals. He requested
banks to help their exporting clients evolve sound foreign
exchange risk

management policy. He also took the opportunity to explain the salient
features of EEFC account.
Mr. Amit Diwan, Branch Head,
Citibank, Hyderabad in his special said the success of trading in the
foreign exchange market depends critically on how well the exporter
assesses, prices and manages the risk and on its ability to limit losses
from particular transactions and keep its overall exposure controlled.
In the wake of high
volatility of Indian rupee, said Mr. Diwan, right exposure to various tools
like options, derivatives etc. would help exporters a lot. He advised the
exporters to use various forex risk management tools to safeguard their
business interests.
During the technical session,
Mr. Anirban Banerjee, Asst. Vice President, Citibank, Mumbai, made a
presentation on Trade Finance covering various services offered by his bank
to importers and exporters. He elaborated on regulations governing trade
such as UCP 600, pre-shipment and post-shipment finance, LC
negotiation/discounting, discrepancies in LC, checklists etc.
Mr. Gautam Dass, Asst. Vice
President, Treasury-Sales, Citibank, Mumbai, explained common forex terms
like cash marking, forward contracts, options etc. in the context of
international trade.
Mr. Mahesh Patha,
Relationship Manager, Citibank, Hyderabad, explained about various financial
products including special products for SSI. He explained credit analysis
and sanction process in detail.
Dr. Murali Darshan, Faculty,
Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi encapsulated the
dynamically changing international market scenario in wake of globalization
and emerging trade blocks while making presentation on Export Market
Planning. He stressed upon the need of ethical practices in international
business on one hand and intelligent use of technology on the other to
expand Indian export markets abroad.
