Commenting on
the ban on export of rice by Indian government, Mr. Sleh said that the ban
was not taken in the right spirit by Tunisian Government, especially because
it was imposed during the season of Ramadan.
Responding to
this, FIEO Director General Mr. Ajay Sahai said that the ban was imposed in
the national interest but the Federation was in favour of free trade. He
informed the delegates that a meeting had been fixed with the Indian
Minister of State for Commerce, Mr. Jairam Ramesh for resolving the issue
and hoped that the ban was lifted as early as possible.
Pointing to
the areas of bilateral cooperation, Mr. Sahai said that Tourism could be a
very important sector as foreign exchange regulations were being relaxed by
India. He added that many of the 7.2 mn Indian tourists, who visited
overseas last year, favoured non-traditional exotic locations.
Earlier,
while welcoming the delegates, FIEO’s Eastern Region Chairman
Mr. S K Jain said that India was looking forward to cooperation
with Tunisia in sectors like information technology, biotechnology,
engineering, drugs & pharmaceuticals, scientific research, agro-products
etc.
Tunisia is
the 4th largest producer of olive oil in the world and exports a major part
of its production. Tunisia has been supplying different fertilizers to
India. In time to come, India will supply ready-to-eat processed food to
Tunisia. Mr. Jain added.
