Workshop on WTO & Export Procedures at Kanpur

Developed countries are dumping their goods in developing countries like India, subsidising their agriculture exports and adopting protectionist measures against import of agro and other farm products from developing countries, said Northern Region Chairman of FIEO Dr. R. K. Dhawan while addressing a two-day workshop on WTO & Export Procedures at Kanpur. Dr. Dhawan insisted that the developed countries should provide level-playing field to the products from developing countries and should not discourage them by imposing non-tariff barriers.

activities undertaken by FIEO and its role in facilitating the members to participate in various trade promotion events organized abroad. He informed them how they could avail of the MDA scheme for participating in international trade shows or buyers-seller meets.

Earlier, while inaugurating the workshop on 5th January, Dr. R. C. Srivastava, Principal Secretary Industries & Export Commissioner, Govt. of UP stressed the need for organizing such workshops at various export clusters of the State. He said: "Such workshops would educate the exporters as well as the officials engaged in export promotion about the objectives of the WTO, its various provisions and the forthcoming challenges and opportunities for exporters of the State. Dr. Srivastava also revealed his intention to set up a WTO cell at Lucknow for the said purpose.

Commissioner & Director of Industries in UP, Mr. Mohd. Iftikharuddin in his address laid stress on utilizing the Cluster Development Scheme for growth and promotion of exports saying that the maximum exports from the state were from clusters of export oriented industries such as leather from Kanpur, brassware from Moradabad, woolen carpet from Bhadohi & Mirzapur and silk from Varanasi.

The workshop was organized by the FIEO (Northern Region) in association with Department of Industries, Kanpur. The workshop was sponsored by UP Export Promotion Bureau, Lucknow and assisted by the faculty members of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi.
