Growth figure deceive: FIEO Chief Commenting on the latest export data released by the Government, in a press statement issued on 4th December, Mr. Ganesh Kumar Gupta, President, FIEO cautioned that the increased exports was primarily attributed to import intensive sectors such as petroleum, gems and jewellery and engineering whereas exports from traditional and employment generating sectors like textiles, leather, handicrafts, marine, food processing, sports goods were declining which did not augur well for overall exports and employment scenario in the country. If the employment generating sectors of exports are not provided the necessary fillip, said he, it will add to the problem of unemployment which is already affecting a large section of population. President FIEO added that the various measures announced by the Government were not adequate to address the unprecedented problem faced by Indian exports. He demanded that the Government should clarify what is the assistance provided by it through various packages as most of the announcement deals with refund of the taxes and duties already paid by the exporters which are rightfully due for refund. The capping of export credit to 7% does not provide relief to many exporters, said FIEO Chief, as due to clean track records, such exporters are already enjoying credit at 7.75 to 8%. Mr. Gupta also stressed the need for exempting exporters from service tax on all the services so far notified so as to avoid paper work and transaction cost, besides brining new services related to exports within the ambit of exemption. |
