FIEO
participated in the 25th edition of TIBCO 2008, the largest international
fair for consumer goods organized in Romania, held from 18th to 22nd June
2008 in Bucharest. FIEO contingent, comprising of 35 Indian companies, was
led by its Western Region Chairman Mr. S K Saraf. These companies showcased
India’s strength in various sectors like home furnishing, garments,
fashion jewellery, leather products, jute products, handicrafts, coir
products, rubber products, fashion accessories etc.

Over 220
companies, including 79 foreign companies, participated in the show
organized by ROMEXPO. Foreign participants represented 16 countries such as
Bulgaria, Egypt, Germany, Greece, India, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy,
Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Thailand,
Turkey and Hungary.

inauguration ceremony was joined by Mr. Debashish Chakravarti, Indian
Ambassador to Romania and Mr. George CoJocaru, President of ROMEXPO besides

Addressing
the ceremony, Indian Ambassador noted that Romanian market offered huge
opportunities for Indian businessmen after its inclusion in the European
Union. Engagements between Romania and Indian SMEs could be very productive
and mutually beneficial, he added.
Commenting on
the value of participating in TIBCO, Indian Ambassador said, such events
acquaint businessmen on both sides with markets, business practices,
management styles and lay the basis for further networking among business
partners.

FIEO Chairman
in his address informed that the Federation had brought Indian consumer
products to TIBCO for the fourth time in a row since March 2005 because of
the encouraging response received by Indian participants. He observed that
between 2002 and 2007 bilateral trade between India and Romania increased by
almost 800% to reach over US$ 800 million. According to him, India’s major
export items to Romania are iron ore, drugs, pharmaceuticals & fine
chemicals, machinery & instruments, processed minerals and plastic &
linoleum products and the major import items from Romania are iron &
steel, machinery excluding electric & electronic, transport equipments,
wheat, metal ores |

& scraps. However, he feels that businessmen from the
two countries can also explore cooperation in sectors like information
technology, pharmaceuticals, energy, metallurgy and heavy industries.
In order to
further strengthen trade and commerce between the two sides, FIEO Chairman
informed that an India Trade Centre was being established in Romania to tap
business opportunities in European Union, Balkan States and the adjoining
areas of Central Asia, especially the CIS countries. He invited the audience
to visit the provisional office of ITC and to have a glimpse of ongoing
construction of the stands of ITC member companies. To represent the
interest of the stakeholders taking permanent space in ITC, a company named
Indus Trade Services (ITS) had already been registered in Romania and all
legal formalities had been completed, he informed.
